Nor'Easter Flood

April 2007

Only a few saw it coming the night before. I thought a wet vac would help and managed to get my couch out of the room, if only I knew....

We watched as the river crept across the guard rails. It was truly unreal.

But watching the river creep up your street is even more eerie.

This picture was taken through the front window, outside the house, as the water rose and was too cold to stand in for more than a few minutes.
That's my bedroom on the left, my office on the right and my living room in the foreground. And yes, that's all water....

Afterwards came the clean up. This was my office. Its not entirely obvious from the photo, but the desk is leaning to the left.
The water line was about 6 inches above the printer for about 6 days. Everything you see here was soaking wet and is all now in a landfill somewhere in New Jersey. Note the buckled bookshelf. That happened because the books inside had swollen to double their size.
Some even began to "pop" out on their own.

And here is the office after clean up. Note the stack of USPS boxes? That would be the gift of new books from my Bluestocking friends at Candice Hern's site. The desk, shelves, all-weather carpet and paint were bought with donations given to me by my coworkers, clients and friends. Thankfully, I managed to save my favorite chair, though it took about a month to dry. And yes, all my shelves are well off the ground now.

I just wanted to take this time to thank all of those whose generous and selfless donations helped me to get back on my feet again.
It is through disasters such as these that you come to know who your true friends are and I am touched and humbled to see that I have so many that are so dear to me.
Thank you all so much.
